How Does it
Work?
The method is to collect real time traffic flow information
from road sensors into a central computer server that models actual traffic
conditions. The point of origination and destination for individual trips
is submitted and the computer calculates the LTR for that trip based on
the actual real time traffic conditions. The LTR is then delivered to
the driver complete with the estimated time and distance for the trip.
Initial customer testing on the working TA system in Southern California
has proven that this LTR service saves drivers on average over 15% in
drive time by routing around traffic congestion to roads with the fastest
moving traffic. Additionally, the TA server monitors the progress of the
trip and sends revised or updated routing based on more current information
if conditions change during the trip.
